Guides

Short, sourced answers to the questions people ask before a crisis.

How much cash should you keep at home for a blackout?

The Dutch central bank recommends €70 per adult and €30 per child to get through the first 72 hours. Sweden's Riksbank suggests, for example, 1,000 kronor in cash per adult.

Family emergency communication plan: what to agree in advance

Agree on two meeting places, one out-of-area contact person and a written list of numbers that everyone carries. Then practise it once, so nobody has to improvise when phone lines are busy.

What food to store for 72 hours without cooking?

Choose long-life food you can eat straight from the pack: canned meat, fish, vegetables and fruit, crackers, bars, nuts, dried fruit and peanut butter, plus a manual can opener and utensils. Ready.gov, BBK and Poland's RCB all point to food that needs no refrigeration, cooking or special preparation.

Emergency go-bag for wheelchair users, people with disabilities and older adults

If carrying a 10 kg backpack isn't realistic, plan around a lighter bag, the right repair and power kit for your equipment, and a support network of at least three nearby people who know how to help.

How to prepare for a power outage (blackout) at home

Prepare for a power outage with food that needs no cooking, water, charged power banks, flashlights, a battery or crank radio and some cash. Poland's government safety guide suggests home supplies for at least three days; BBK and Ready.gov add advice on warmth and safe habits.

How much water do you need for 72 hours?

Plan at least 2 litres of water per person per day for drinking and cooking – that's 6 litres per person for 72 hours. With basic hygiene, plan around 3 litres a day.
